Three Stars 1. Sebastian Aho, Carolina Hurricanes. Aho followed up his five-point effort against Minnesota over the weekend by scoring a pair of goals in the Hurricanes’ 6-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. After recording just one point in his first six games, Aho has been dominant for the Hurricanes and is now up to 28 points in his past 25 games. His assist numbers are still down a little bit this season, but he is now on pace for 48 goals this season. That number would shatter his career high. 2. Marc-Andre Fleury, Vegas Golden Knights. Fleury made his return to the Golden Knights’ lineup on Tuesday night after being away from the team due to a personal matter. He was outstanding in the Golden Knights’ 5-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, turning aside 28 of the 29 shots he faced. It was his first start since Nov. 23 and he missed a shutout by only 27 seconds. This game quickly turned into a rout as the Blackhawks’ already undermanned defense … [Read more...] about The Buzzer: Aho shines again, Fleury’s big return, Red Wings lose 12th in a row

Report: Yankees sign Gerrit Cole to record nine-year, $324 million contract
Big news just ahead of midnight at the Winter Meetings in San Diego: per Jon Heyman, the Yankees have signed free agent starter Gerrit Cole to a record-breaking nine-year, $324 million contract. It’s the largest ever contract for a pitcher in terms of length, total value, and average annual value. ESPN’s Jeff Passan adds that the deal allows for Cole to opt out after the fifth year. Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, none of the money in the contract is deferred and Cole received a full no-trade clause. Stephen Strasburg re-signed with the Nationals on Monday, signing a seven-year, $245 million deal. It was, at the time, the record for a pitcher in terms of total value and AAV while tying the record for length. Cole’s contract eclipsed that by a long shot. Cole, 29, is coming off a career year in which he paced the league with 326 strikeouts, a 13.8 K/9, and an adjusted ERA of 185. He led the American League with a 2.50 ERA and a 2.64 FIP. He was even better in … [Read more...] about Report: Yankees sign Gerrit Cole to record nine-year, $324 million contract
Shaw mocks Lukaku with ‘welcome back’ message as Inter drop into Europa League
Lukaku's 12th goal of the season for Inter in all competitions was not enough to prevent the Nerazzurri losing 2-1 to a much-changed Barcelona team at San Siro. The result, combined with Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 win over Slavia Prague, meant Inter finished third in Group F and will therefore drop into the Europa League for the rest of the season. Shaw was quick to poke fun at Lukaku on social media after the match. Responding to a post from the striker back in October, showing Lukaku smiling in training with the caption "UCL", the acronym for UEFA Champions League, Shaw said on Tuesday: "Welcome back." Welcome back https://t.co/Q07D1SwHGZ — Luke Shaw (@LukeShaw23) December 10, 2019 Lukaku, who left United to join Inter for a reported initial fee of €65million in August, could now face his former employers in the last 32 of the Europa League. United have qualified from their group but must avoid defeat to AZ at Old Trafford on Thursday in order to secure top spot and enter … [Read more...] about Shaw mocks Lukaku with ‘welcome back’ message as Inter drop into Europa League
