West Indies vs New Zealand, 1st T20I: Shimron Hetmyer’s One-Handed Screamer To Send Martin Guptill Packing. Watch | Cricket News

August 11, 2022 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

West Indies lost the first T20 International (T20I) against New Zealand on Wednesday, but their players produced some fine displays on the field. The one piece of fielding that probably stood out most was Shimron Hetmyer 's brilliant one-handed catch in the deep that gave them the first breakthrough in the form of Martin Guptill . New Zealand, after being put in to bat by Nicholas Pooran , started well and were ticking along and building a solid opening partnership when Odean Smith sent Guptill and Devon Conway packing off successive deliveries in the 8th over. Guptill was the first to go as he looked to cut a short and wide delivery from Smith. It looked set to be a six, but Hetmyer, running behind from point, jumped and plucked the ball out of the air with his left hand to give his team a wicket out of nowhere. Watch: Shimron Hetmyer's outstanding catch to dismiss Martin Guptill What a catch from @SHetmyer ! RACISM IN NEW ZEALAND CRICKET by Cricbuzz Staff • Published on Share Tweet "Cricket in New Zealand is a pretty white sport," Taylor wrote in his book. © Getty Ross Taylor alleged that he and some other New Zealand players were victims of racism in New Zealand cricket. In his autobiography, Black & White, Taylor wrote that the game in New Zealand was 'a pretty white sport'. "Cricket in New Zealand is a pretty white sport," Taylor wrote in his book, an extract from which was published by the New Zealand Herald. "For much of my career I've been an anomaly, a brown face in a vanilla line-up. That has its challenges, many of which aren't readily apparent to your team-mates or the cricketing public. Given that the Polynesian community is dramatically under-represented in the game, it's probably no surprise that people sometimes assume I'm Maori or Indian." Solid knocks by captain Kane Williamson and wicketkeeper-batter Devon Conway and brilliant bowling by Mitchell Santner powered New Zealand to a 13-run win over West Indies in the first T20I of the three-match series at Sabina Park in Jamaica on Wednesday. "Nice to get the win. The performance was pleasing. We know that this West Indies side is capable of amazing things, so to get over the line is a good feeling. It is about playing roles for the side, felt nice to make a contribution. Those small cameos helped to keep the score moving. Power is always there in the West Indies team, so it was about staying calm and executing the plans," said Williamson in a post-match presentation. New Zealand, who have picked a full-strength squad for the series, started on the right note with a 13-run victory over the home side in Jamaica. "I wouldn't say we have set roles as of yet," Conway said. "This is a great opportunity to try different combinations. It's nice that everyone is back though. It will obviously provide good opportunities for guys to experience different roles. “Might Be the Guy”: Jayawardene Thinks Pakistan Star Can Dethrone Root As Top Test Batter | Cricket News

August 11, 2022 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

Dubai: Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene has picked Pakistan captain Babar Azam as the cricketer who, he believes, can dethrone England's Joe Root as top Test batter. Root has been ruling the roost at the top of the Test rankings since June, with the Englishman enjoying a fine World Test Championship, and in a rich vein of form under new coach Brendon McCullum. The former England captain has scored more runs than any other player since the turn of the decade, and deservedly claimed the ICC Men's Test Player of the Year award in 2021. "Tough one!" Jayawardena said on the latest episode of The ICC Review, when asked who can dethrone Root from the top spot. "I would say Babar Azam has an opportunity. He's been consistent in all three formats and it shows in his rankings. He's a naturally gifted player, plays in all conditions, he's got the game to adapt as well. "It depends on the amount of cricket, who's playing when and how much but Babar might be the guy."
