And if Leeds can keep their nerve then they will be back in the Premier League for the first time in 16 years. After Sheffield United's win over Nottingham Forest earlier, Leeds are out of the promotion spots on goal difference but will return to second if they avoid defeat this afternoon against Wigan. In reality, only a win will do for Marcelo Bielsa's team against a Wigan side that are one place, and two points above the relegation zone. … [Read more...] about Leeds vs Wigan, Championship: Live score and latest updates

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio point guard Derrick White was screaming, flexing and stomping around the court after almost every basket against Denver. It was completely out of character for White, but the mild-mannered point guard has never been in this situation before. White had a career-high 36 points and the Spurs beat the Nuggets 118-108 on Thursday night, withstanding a first-half lapse to take a 2-1 lead in the first-round series. “I just had a chip on my shoulder,” White said. “This is the way I’ve played since I was young. Just try to go out there, compete and have fun.” Nikola Jokic had 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Denver. Game 4 is Saturday in San Antonio, where the Spurs are 3-0 against the Nuggets this season. White attacked Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray from the opening tip after being on the receiving end of Murray’s career outing Tuesday night. Murray had only six points, a game after scoring 21 of his 24 … [Read more...] about Derrick White scores 36 points as Spurs take 2-1 lead vs. Nuggets
Chris McCosky The Detroit News Published 7:08 PM EDT Apr 18, 2019 Detroit — Ron Gardenhire was determined to break the tension Thursday morning. With his club dragging through a prolonged losing streak and his hitters getting more frustrated every day, Gardenhire decided to reach into his bag of levity and maybe loosen things up a bit. “I’m going to go into the hitting meeting today, which I don’t normally do,” he said. “Maybe I will show them my batting stance and how I used to hit. Then they will really think they are good.” There was one problem with that. "I told them we couldn't find video of it, it's all on Betamax," he joked. Gardenhire, in his inimitable way, got his message across — let's stop grousing around and start having some fun. "I told them to quit worrying about all that stuff," he said. "Let's not talk about it anymore. I don't want to talk about two-strike approach anymore. All I want to do … [Read more...] about ‘We needed this’: Gardenhire’s message helps Tigers vanquish five-game skid

"He just said, 'That's not the way we play, and you need to pick it up,'" Tar Heels guard Cameron Johnson said. "We received that message loud and clear. We knew that first half was unacceptable." It took a half to show it, but North Carolina (28-6) looked the part of a top seed in an 88-73 victory. The Tar Heels advanced to the second round of the Midwest Region to face ninth-seeded Washington (27-8) on Sunday. The Tar Heels had won their previous seven games as a No. 1 under Williams by an average … [Read more...] about March Madness 2019: UNC players get the message, finish like a 1-seed
