0 Have your say How many people play the game of rugby union in Scotland? It’s a reasonable enough question but the answer depends upon who you ask. According to World Rugby’s latest numbers which were last updated in 2016, Scotland has a total of 49,265 registered players and a eye-catching, total of 164,191 players all told which means there are a lot of mini and midi players out there. But if you were to ask the same question of Iain “the Bear” Milne, former Scotland prop and currently the chief cook and bottle washer at Heriot’s Rugby Club, the answer is 4,000-4,500 adult males.Milne did a back-of-the-envelope calculation. He went on to the Scottish Rugby website and totted up the number of teams that actually played a real match of rugby. He took that number and multiplied it by an approximate squad strength of 20 and arrived at the figure of 4,000-4,500 actual adult male rugby players. (I did the same with the women and … [Read more...] about ‘We simply don’t have enough bad players.’ Scottish Rugby’s participation problem

Scottish football’s winter shutdown was both a blessing and a curse for Rangers, according to Gary McAllister. The Ibrox assistant manager had never experienced a mid-season break and, on a personal level, found it an attractive feature of the game in Scotland, but speaking from a coach’s perspective, he believes it disrupted the momentum which saw Rangers win an Old Firm derby for the first time since Brendan Rodgers arrived at Celtic Park in the summer of 2016. After the restart, Rangers lost to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park to fall six points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table and, asked if he felt that the stoppage of action had been a factor, McAllister said: “Obviously with the way the first result went for us, then you would probably have to say yes, but looking at the squad and the players I think they needed it. “There was a massive push for the Old Firm game and I think we had played 34 or 35 games by mid-December. Our players definitely … [Read more...] about Winter break disrupted Rangers’ momentum, claims Gary McAllister, as Kilmarnock Cup tie ends goalless
0 Have your say The tears of emotion stained on the face of Henry Dumigan painted a perfect picture of a cup upset that will be recalled for years to come: the day Auchinleck Talbot, for long the kingpins of Junior football, flexed their muscles on the seniors and claimed their biggest scalp. Craig McCracken’s powerful header from Mark Shankland’s sweet delivery knocked out Ayr United and took Talbot into the last 16 of the William Hill Scottish Cup.Dumigan joined the club committee 42 years ago, becoming secretary in 1982, a post he still holds to this day.He has been at the helm as Talbot have dominated at their level, winning the Scottish Junior Cup a record 12 times and clinching the West Premier title five times.Dumigan was drained at the final whistle as if he had kicked every ball in a frantic struggle played out before a full house crowd and a live TV audience, the latter a first for Beechwood Park. He admitted: “This is obviously the … [Read more...] about Scottish Cup shock is awesome for Auchinleck Talbot
0 Have your say There will be multitudes of suppers to mark the life Rabbie Burns in the coming days and he more than most would surely have appreciated the sheer romance served up by this Scottish Cup sensation deep in his beloved Ayrshire. In particular the national bard would have been especially tickled to see the gentry – in this occasion the Championship’s Ayr United – sent away with their tails between their legs by the footballers of the proud old mining village of Auchinleck. This was no freak result. Talbot deserved it with a display that was steeped in professionalism in every aspect – fitness, tactical nous, formation, team ethos and, yes, a word that doesn’t instantly come up in conversations about the much derided Junior game, skill. Thrown together they produced a perfect game strategy on the day, with the breakthrough goal coming 12 minutes from time from a monumental header from centre-half Craig McCracken. As is … [Read more...] about Auchinleck Talbot 1
0 Have your say The near universal response to the announcement that the SRU’s director of rugby Scott Johnson was returning home to take up the same position within Rugby Australia was to question the veracity of Abraham Lincoln’s famous remark. It appears that you can fool all of the people all of the time. To say that the Scottish public never warmed to the stout Australian is something of an understatement and he proved a useful punch bag for the media too. But, during his reign, Scotland reached their highest ever world ranking (fifth) and now both pro-teams are in contention for a place in the European Champions Cup quarter-finals for the first time in history. All this while Johnson was at the wheel so he must have been doing something right… right? It is easier to state what he got wrong if only because it is more obvious. The Australian likes to portray himself as an outsider, swimming against the tide, and he undoubtedly did that when … [Read more...] about Iain Morrison: What did Scott Johnson ever do for Scottish Rugby?
