By Kevin McGran Sports Reporter Fri., Feb. 8, 2019 The Auston Matthews contract should have been cause for a celebration. Instead it was a rare misstep by GM Kyle Dubas and president Brendan Shanahan. Not because it was a bad deal. To me, it’s a great deal. A terrific, cap-friendly number that gives the Leafs cost-certainty on one of their two most important players and gives Matthews a shot at free agency at age 26. Totally fair. The Leafs have five years to win the Cup with this core. If they haven’t, by then maybe it would be time for everyone – Dubas included — to move on. Don’t let them get old together without a championship. No, it was a mis-step because Mitch Marner wasn’t there beside Matthews. Signing the two at the same time should have been a gimme. Didn’t happen. So When Matthews signed, the story changed instantly to: “What about Marner?” It’s hard to imagine this team — and its … [Read more...] about MAILBAG: Matthews signed, now it’s ‘What about Marner?’

Free agents who sign with new teams are not disloyal
Most mornings my local newspaper is pretty predictable. I know, when I navigate to its home page, that I’ll find about eleventeen stories about Ohio State football, even if it is not football season (especially if it’s not football season, actually), part 6 of an amazingly detailed 8-part investigation into a thing that is super important but which no one reads because it has nothing to do with Ohio State football and, perhaps, a handful of write-ups of stories that went viral online six days previously and have nothing to do with anything that matters. Local print news is doing great, everyone. I did, however, get a surprise this morning. A story about baseball! A baseball story that was not buried seven clicks into the sports section, but one that was surfaced onto the front page of the website! The story was about Michael Brantley signing with the Astros. Normally I’d be dead chuffed! But then I saw something which kinda irked me. Check out the headline: Is … [Read more...] about Free agents who sign with new teams are not disloyal
Real Madrid vs. Leganes live stream: Watch La Liga online
Real Madrid face Leganes at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, Sept. 1. Here’s all the info you need to watch the match. It’s derby weekend across Spain this week and Madrid is no different as Real Madrid host Leganes in game week 3. Its a mere 20 minutes drive from the visitor’s home ground to the Santiago Bernabeu in uptown Madrid, a stadium where they have enjoyed mixed fortunes since their promotion in 2016. Los Pepineros are still waiting for their first derby win against Madrid in the league, having lost all four previous matches, however, they produced one of the shocks of last season by beating Madrid at the Bernabeu in the Copa Del Rey, dumping Los Blancos out of the competition. It was a performance that Zidane quoted as one of his most difficult moments as Madrid manager and the squad will be eager to make sure that new manager, Julen Lopetegui, doesn’t have to suffer a similar humiliation. Madrid fans might see new signing, Mariano, line out for Los … [Read more...] about Real Madrid vs. Leganes live stream: Watch La Liga online

Blueprint for Odell Beckham’s new Giants contract: Big bucks for WR, small protections for NY
Jeff Diamond Contributor @jeffdiamondNFL Updated at 10:59 a.m. ET Updated at 10:59 a.m. ET Watch NFLNFL with fuboTV All pro sports contracts require a leap of faith to varying degrees. A huge extension for diva wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will top the charts in terms of anxiety level for the Giants if and when a new deal is finalized. As general manager Dave Gettleman works toward a new contract for OBJ with Giants owner John Mara watching closely, my advice to the team is simple: Proceed with caution. Be sure the deal includes protections for New York so Beckham has to be productive on the field and trouble-free off the field in order to max out the potential dollars. MORE: NFL's highest-paid players in 2018 I salute Beckham and his agent Zeke Sandhu for the smart decision to participate in the Giants' offseason program and report on time to training camp.
