Even the most ardent Chelsea fan should allow themselves a wry smile at the fact that the club’s longest-serving player has made just two starts for the team – nearly five years ago. Tomas Kalas reclaimed a little prominence when he scored an own goal in the Czech Republic’s 5-0 defeat by England at Wembley last Friday. Had the defender been around at Stamford Bridge for all the time since he joined in January 2011, he would have played under nine managers. Instead, he has been on loan variously at his original club Sigma Olomouc, Vitesse Arnhem, Cologne, Middlesbrough, Fulham and Bristol City, where he moved last summer. This isn’t pointed out to knock the extensive use of the loan system by Chelsea, as much as it stretches the practise to its very limits. Instead, Kalas’s long, if sparse, service in a blue shirt reinforces the idea that even players who barely get a kick over eight years survive a lot longer on the payroll in SW6 than the … [Read more...] about Hazard exit will end era of the long-serving superstar at Chelsea
Signed contract of employment but changed mind
We are now in the era of the director of football. In days gone by, it used to be that the manager was the supreme leader of a football club. They would be directly involved in almost every aspect of the club, be it training sessions, working on transfers and contracts or laying foundations for the future. Known as the Star of Hope, the former Odd Fellows hall is beyond decrepit, with boarded-up windows, crumbling walls and ceilings, and a general aura of woebegone weirdness. This is where Robert Indiana, one of America’s most celebrated artists, lived and worked in semiseclusion for four decades. It’s also where the Pop Art sensation, best known for his colorful 1960s prints and sculptures of the word “LOVE,” died last May at the age of 89, surrounded by several tons of old newspapers, dozens of stuffed animals, a lifetime of bric-a-brac, and thousands of paintings, sculptures, prints, poems, and journals — none of them … [Read more...] about In wake of famed artist Robert Indiana’s death, a tangle of allegations
Michael Regan/Getty Images Former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas says he thinks Eden Hazard will turn down Real Madrid's advances and sign a new contract with the Blues after his old team-mate said he's decided his next career move. Fabregas—who left Chelsea to join AS Monaco in January—told Cadena SER (h/t Metro's Chris Davie) he didn't know what Hazard will do come the end of the season before changing his stance: "If he already said that he has made his choice, I think that he will renew his contract with Chelsea. I just found out about that, actually. "I can tell you that Hazard would never get into a disagreement with Chelsea because he wants to leave. It is the club of his life and he has won everything in England playing for them. "But I believe that if he already made the decision, it was a while ago because those choices are usually not made during the middle of the season." Hazard—who turned 28 this month—joined Chelsea from Lille … [Read more...] about Cesc Fabregas Thinks Eden Hazard Will Reject Real Madrid, Sign New Chelsea Deal

Missteps are an unavoidable part of the process. They're also one of the most critical developmental tools, provided we're able to learn from them. So, before we shift to the refreshing feeling of starting a new calendar, we first must reflect on the biggest 2018 regret for each of the Association's 30 squads.
