How Chelsea’s new spin on long-term contracts aligns with Todd Boehly’s approach as Dodgers minority owner
Getty Images The year is 2029. Graham Potter's vibrant Chelsea side are once more sweeping all ahead of them, swashbuckling in attack but with the defensive instincts that only come through years together on the training ground. Yet another Champions League is seemingly within reach for this side, who, for what feels like a generation, have grown together into a footballing force. That, perhaps, is the end vision underpinning Chelsea's radical new approach to the management of contracts at Stamford Bridge. In an era of dwindling patience and fast fixes, the Todd Boehly-led consortium that took control last summer are building a squad for the long term, whether they like it or not. Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. victim of additional racist abuse from Atletico Madrid fans ahead of derby
Getty Images Atletico Madrid supporters have targeted Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior with racial abuse ahead of Thursday's Copa del Rey meeting between the two rivals. A banner reading "Madrid hates Real" was unfurled near Ciudad Deportiva and the inciteful text was accompanied by a large doll being hung by its neck. The figure was wearing the white kit of Real and had Vinicius Junior's name and number on the back. The star attacker has a history of being the victim of racial abuse during his time in Spain. The Brazilian international was targeted by Atleti supporters when the two teams met earlier this season . The text on the banner, hanging above the doll, is one of the slogans used by a known group of Atleti ultras that has displayed similar banners over the years. Atletico issued an official statement condemning the behavior, saying " these are repugnant and inadmissible acts that shame society ." "The rivalry between the two clubs is the greatest, but so is … [Read more...] about Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. victim of additional racist abuse from Atletico Madrid fans ahead of derby
Why Jordan Poole’s shot that led to Stephen Curry’s ejection in Warriors-Grizzlies wasn’t that bad
Getty Images Jordan Poole had himself an eventful 80 seconds to close the Warriors ' wild win over Memphis on Wednesday night. After attempting a somewhat ill-advised 3-pointer that irked Stephen Curry to the point the Warriors star hurled his mouthpiece into the stands, which led to his being ejected, Poole redeemed himself by producing the game-winning layup off a baseline out-of-bounds play as Golden State escaped with a 122-120 victory. JORDAN POOLE. GAME ‼️ pic.twitter.com/rcNtSJMzOm — Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) January 26, 2023 So the layup was cool. Steve Kerr said Draymond Green called for the play. Three Grizzlies followed Klay Thompson as he curled around to the strong-side corner, another example of the Splash Brothers' gravity creating backdoor opportunities for teammates, and Poole made a great cut with Ziaire Williams positioned on his top side and the rim vacated. But what I want to talk about more is this supposed awful shot that … [Read more...] about Why Jordan Poole’s shot that led to Stephen Curry’s ejection in Warriors-Grizzlies wasn’t that bad

Canucks president Jim Rutherford apologizes for how Bruce Boudreau’s firing was handled
Getty Images The Vancouver Canucks fired head coach Bruce Boudreau and replaced him with Rick Tocchet on Sunday in a move that was rumored to be on the horizon for weeks. In the month leading up to his firing, Boudreau more than once fielded questions about his job security and got emotional in press conferences on multiple occasions. His imminent firing was such a poorly kept secret that Canucks fans even treated Saturday's loss to the Edmonton Oilers as a heartfelt send-off for the 68-year-old coach . During the Canucks' press conference to announce the coaching change, team president Jim Rutherford admitted to having regrets about how the situation was handled. He blamed his own bluntness for the endless speculation around Boudreau this season. Here's what he had to say: "Now, part of this process, and I will apologize to Bruce for this, is probably in my interviews over the course of the season. NHL Power Rankings: Oilers are ascending, thanks to Connor McDavid’s sensational season
CBS Sports After reaching the Western Conference Finals last season, there was a lot of pressure on the Edmonton Oilers to make another deep playoff run this year. The team got off to a shaky start in 2022-23, but it has the best player in the world on its roster. Despite some of the questions about the Oilers' goaltending and depth, Connor McDavid has been able to cover those up by scoring at a rate not seen in the post-lockout era. Through 48 games played, McDavid has already scored 40 goals and tallied 88 points. He has the Oilers riding a six-game winning streak. McDavid is on pace to finish the regular season with 68 goals, 82 assists, and 150 points. The NHL hasn't seen numbers like that since Mario Lemieux notched 69 goals and 161 points in the 1995-96 season. Edmonton may have some personnel deficiencies, but those don't matter when McDavid is averaging almost two points per game. As McDavid leads the Oilers up the Pacific Division standings, here are the … [Read more...] about NHL Power Rankings: Oilers are ascending, thanks to Connor McDavid’s sensational season
