Going into Birmingham 2022, slipping out of the usual top-five was seen as a real possibility in absence of shooting, but phenomenal success in athletics and lawn bowls propelled India to a commendable fourth-place finish. About 25 per cent of India's 66 medals came from the shooting range in the previous edition held at Gold Coast, Australia, and not many believed that India will be able to touch even 50. But the country ended up with 61, courtesy unprecedented success in track and field events that delivered eight medals. As the Games concluded, with PTI inputs, myKhel.com looks at some of the highs and lows for India at Birmingham 2022. Athletics Eldhose Paul and Abdullah Aboobacker's rare 1-2 finish in triple jump will be cherished for long. This incredible feat was the pinnacle of what was a roller coaster ride for the Savita-led Indian team who showed resilience to bounce back from a heartbreaking ninth place finish at the FIH Women's World Cup which took place in the Netherlands and Spain in July. The Indian team also took part in their last set of FIH Hockey Pro League matches in June in Belgium and Netherlands, where they finished third. Reflecting on the long tour, Indian Women's Hockey Team Captain Savita said, "It was a pretty long tour, there were ups and downs but it taught us a lot of things. We started the tour on a strong note by finishing third in our debut FIH Hockey Pro League 2021/22 campaign and then went through a rough patch during the World Cup. “Finishing ninth was disappointing, but it was equally important to move ahead and take positive learnings from the campaign to focus on the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. "We then had a short preparatory camp in Nottingham, where we … [Read more...] about It’s not just a medal for us, it’s an inspiration: Savita reflects on historic Commonwealth Games campaign

Undefeated over the eleven rounds, the team coached by GM Ivan Sokolov edged out Armenia on tiebreak, automatically becoming national heroes. The young Uzbek team was led by 17-year-old Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who last Christmas dethroned Magnus Carlsen as the World Rapid Chess Champion. A chess prodigy, Nodirbek was one of the youngest players ever to achieve the Grandmaster title, at the age of 13 years, 1 month, and 11 days. The young Uzbek star had an excellent performance in Chennai, scoring 7 victories (five of them consecutive), 3 draws, and only one loss. 20-year-old Nodirbek Yakubboev, 16-year-old Javokhir Sindarov, and 20-year-old Shamsiddin Vokhidov are the other three juniors in the team, that only featured one player in his late twenties: the "veteran" of the team, Jahongir Vakhidov, at 27. This huge achievement by the young Uzbek prodigies comes just at the right moment, as Tashkent was confirmed a few days ago as the venue for the 2026 edition of the Chess … [Read more...] about Chess Olympiad 2022: Uzbekistan kids clinch gold; Armenia gets silver, while India B snatch bronze
