USA Today Sports Images Grant Wells has been named Virginia Tech's starting quarterback for the 2022 season opener against Old Dominion on Sept. 2, Hokies coach Brent Pry announced Wednesday. Wells, a redshirt junior transfer from Marshall , topped South Carolina transfer Jason Brown and Connor Blumrick in the competition. Wells ranks among the most productive transfers in college football , having completed 64.4% of his passes for 5,626 yards and 34 touchdowns with a 14-9 record in two seasons for the Thundering Herd. In 2020, he became the first freshman to earn first-team All-Conference USA honors. The West Virginia native has at least two years of eligibility remaining, not counting the blanket eligibility waiver granted by the NCAA after the COVID-19 season. More importantly, Wells hopes to bring consistency to what quietly was one of the most inconsistent quarterback situations in the country over the past half-decade. Wells will be the sixth … [Read more...] about Virginia Tech names Grant Wells starting QB: Former Marshall star will take the field Week 1 vs. Old Dominion

Seattle Seahawks QB Drew Lock positive for COVID-19, ruled out for preseason game against Bears
The first Drew Lock -related update Tuesday came from Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll , who announced the former Missouri Tigers quarterback would start the team's second preseason game. Then it was revealed that Lock tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Thursday game's against the Chicago Bears. After announcing Lock would start over Geno Smith , who started Seattle's preseason opener last week, Carroll explained that rotating the starting quarterback was a pre-planned decision. "We had planned well back before the offseason even started to get to this game, the second game, Geno would be the starter in (the mock game) at Lumen and the opening game, then we would go with Drew in the second game," Carroll said. "We're trying to follow that if we can. This was part the plan. Regardless of what happened, we were going to Drew a chance to start a game to see what happens. Fortunately, he has played really well, and he deserves a shot to play, just like … [Read more...] about Seattle Seahawks QB Drew Lock positive for COVID-19, ruled out for preseason game against Bears
Michigan QB battle: Jim Harbaugh suggests Cade McNamara, J.J. McCarthy competition could run into season
USA Today Sports Images Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is open to the possibility of playing both Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy well into the 2022 season if the heated quarterback battle cannot be solved by Week 1 against Colorado State . McNamara, a senior, and McCarthy, a sophomore, have been competing hard this offseason to be QB1 after sharing snaps last season. "This is a very good unique situation. We have two quarterbacks that are playing at a high starter level and we're gonna keep competing and it's possible there's a starter by the first game, and then possible that it plays into the season." Harbaugh said Wednesday , per MLive.com. "Then we pick the one that's gonna help the team win, who's gonna be the best person to play quarterback to win the game." McNamara took the lion's share of snaps in his first full season as a starter in 2021, completing 64.2% of his 327 passes for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns while leading the Wolverines to the College … [Read more...] about Michigan QB battle: Jim Harbaugh suggests Cade McNamara, J.J. Philadelphia Eagles’ DeVonta Smith says ‘things are slowing down’ ahead of Year 2
DeVonta Smith is entering his second season in the NFL and has noticed that the game is moving at a different speed for him. As players get acclimated to the professional ranks, they usually comment that things are moving slower, and Smith expressed that observation in a recent interview with CBS Sports HQ. “Things are slowing down simply because I know the offense now,” Smith said. “I don’t have to worry about this play, what I’m doing, I know what I gotta do so now I can just focus on the details. And then just the communication with the offense as a whole, everything is better." Last season, Smith played in all 17 regular-season games and caught 64 passes for 916 yards and five touchdowns. It was not a bad follow-up to his 2020 season with Alabama that culminated in him becoming the first receiver to win the Heisman in almost 30 years. He was a four-year contributor at Alabama, catching 235 passes for 3,965 yards and 46 scores in 48 career games. During his … [Read more...] about Philadelphia Eagles’ DeVonta Smith says ‘things are slowing down’ ahead of Year 2
Motivation, focus never an issue for Will Anderson Jr., the 2022 CBS Sports Preseason Player of the Year
Graphic by Keytron Jordan HAMPTON, Georgia -- In the beginning, it was about the raw talent for Will Anderson Jr . A teenage edge rusher from an Atlanta suburb, Anderson was a Porsche without brake lights. It didn't matter if the kid couldn't decipher a bull rush from a speed rush. He was a wind-up toy who never wound down. Forget about technique ... that could come later. In that beginning, it was first about making it through a Dutchtown High School practice. Anderson's defensive coordinator, Will Rogers, remembers the prize defender lining up against the offense in drills. "We had to take him out," said Rogers, who was at Dutchtown for Anderson's entire high school career. "We couldn't get anything done [offensively]. I hear they're doing the same thing at Alabama . They've got to get his butt out of there." There is no official word on Anderson's impact at Alabama practices. They are mostly held out of sight of prying eyes. There is enough proof on Saturdays, … [Read more...] about Motivation, focus never an issue for Will Anderson Jr., the 2022 CBS Sports Preseason Player of the Year
Texas Longhorns WR Agiye Hall will rejoin team from suspension when ‘the time is right’, Steve Sarkisian says
The Texas Longhorns are growing thin at wide receiver with the suspension of Agiye Hall and a season-ending injury to Isaiah Neyor . While coach Steve Sarkisian eluded to Hall’s eventual return, he was reluctant to provide a timetable when speaking to reporters on Monday. “When the time is right, we’ll have him back on our team,” Sarkisian said, via Horns247’ Jeff Howe. Hall is suspended indefinitely after he was arrested last week by the University of Texas Police Department. Hall was charged with criminal mischief equal to or greater than $100 but less than $750, which is a Class B misdemeanor. Hall appeared in seven games last season for Alabama, catching four passes for 72 yards. He was at his best in the national championship game, where he caught two passes for 52 yards in a loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. He was expected to be a key contributor for the Crimson Tide before violating team rules and being removed from Alabama’s online roster . Following … [Read more...] about Texas Longhorns WR Agiye Hall will rejoin team from suspension when ‘the time is right’, Steve Sarkisian says
Brian Daboll says Tyrod Taylor will get first-team reps in preseason, makes clear Daniel Jones is starter
The New York Giants have made it clear Daniel Jones is their starting quarterback, even if they signed Tyrod Taylor and declined Jones' fifth-year option this offseason. Jones is the starter in New York, yet there are signals that that may not be the case for the entire season. Tuesday was another example of that, as head coach Brian Daboll admitted Taylor will get an opportunity to play with the first team-offense this preseason. Is there a short leash on Jones? "We'll talk about whatever we think is best," Daboll said, via SNY . "But I have full confidence in Daniel (Jones) and full confidence in Tyrod (Taylor) and what his role is. Each day we sit here and evaluate the guys, but will he (Taylor) get a few reps here or there? He might." Pittsburgh Steelers rookie George Pickens called ‘a freak’ by fellow WR Diontae Johnson
In his first taste of NFL action in the Pittsburgh Steelers' preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks, rookie wide receiver George Pickens shined. He scored on a 26-yard touchdown and finished with 42 yards on three catches. Steelers veteran wideout Diontae Johnson referred to the second-round pick from Georgia as a "freak" when talking to reporters at training camp this week. "He's a freak, that's what he is," Johnson said . "He's a freak. That's a special talent. You can't teach some of the things he does. I just be watching like, man, I be amazed at how he catches the ball sometimes. He's young. He's getting better on the daily." Pickens is coming off an injury-shortened final season at Georgia, as he was limited to just four games after suffering a torn ACL in the spring. He finished the year with five catches for 107 yards, highlighted by a 52-yard catch in the Bulldogs’ win over Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The injury … [Read more...] about Pittsburgh Steelers rookie George Pickens called ‘a freak’ by fellow WR Diontae Johnson
