USA Today Sports Images Grant Wells has been named Virginia Tech's starting quarterback for the 2022 season opener against Old Dominion on Sept. 2, Hokies coach Brent Pry announced Wednesday. Wells, a redshirt junior transfer from Marshall , topped South Carolina transfer Jason Brown and Connor Blumrick in the competition. Wells ranks among the most productive transfers in college football , having completed 64.4% of his passes for 5,626 yards and 34 touchdowns with a 14-9 record in two seasons for the Thundering Herd. In 2020, he became the first freshman to earn first-team All-Conference USA honors. The West Virginia native has at least two years of eligibility remaining, not counting the blanket eligibility waiver granted by the NCAA after the COVID-19 season. More importantly, Wells hopes to bring consistency to what quietly was one of the most inconsistent quarterback situations in the country over the past half-decade. Wells will be the sixth … [Read more...] about Virginia Tech names Grant Wells starting QB: Former Marshall star will take the field Week 1 vs. Old Dominion

The Dallas Cowboys underwent some dramatic changes this offseason, cutting ties with four starters who had made significant impacts on the team over the past several seasons. They enter the 2022 campaign at an inflection point for the Mike McCarthy era, as Jerry Jones has repeatedly made it clear that he has high expectations for his team and if they are not met, he has ... other options. (Hello there, Sean Payton.) Both Jerry and Stephen Jones have maintained that the 2022 Cowboys should be as good or better than the 2021 version, despite the losses of Amari Cooper , Connor Williams , La'el Collins , and Randy Gregory . The replacements for those players are mostly rookies or journeyman veterans, so it remains to be seen whether this team can actually live up to those assertions. With all that in mind, let's take an early look at what the team's depth chart looks like at the moment. Offense Position Starter Backup Depth QB Dak Prescott Will … [Read more...] about Cowboys 2022 depth chart: Noah Brown, rookies Jalen Tolbert and Dennis Houston fighting for No. 3 WR spot

USA Today New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson suffered a bone bruise and meniscus tear during the Jets' first preseason game last Friday night, and a recovery timeline is still being established. NFL Media reports that the recovery plan is complicated, but that it's possible Wilson could miss Week 1 of the regular season. Even in that worst case scenario, don't expect the Jets to add another starter, such as Jimmy Garoppolo . According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media , the Jets "don't appear intent on" adding Garoppolo. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback is still looking for his new NFL team , as the franchise is set on moving forward with Trey Lance under center. The Jets looked like a potential landing spot since head coach Robert Saleh is familiar with Garoppolo from his days as the defensive coordinator in the Bay. However, with Wilson not expected to miss too much time, New York appears comfortable moving forward with Joe Flacco . Wilson reportedly … [Read more...] about Jets don’t appear interested in adding 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo with Zach Wilson injured, per report
