Carolina Panthers depth chart 2022: Starting QB ‘Baker Mayfield’s job to lose,’ per report

August 8, 2022 by 247sports.com Leave a Comment

As the calendar hits the second week of August, things began to clear up at Carolina Panthers training camp. Baker Mayfield , whom the Panthers acquired via trade with the Cleveland Browns before practices kicked off, is in an open quarterback battle with Sam Darnold . However, it is Mayfield's to lose, according to a report Monday by Ian Rapoport on the former Oklahoma Sooners football quarterback and 2017 Heisman Trophy winner. “Yes, it is an open competition between Baker Mayfield , whom they just traded for and Sam Darnold ,” Rapoport said on Inside Training Camp Live . “They're splitting reps, some with the ones, some with the twos, kind of making sure they take turns and both get equal opportunity. But Mike it has been pretty clear. Though the reps have been about equal, it's clear that this is Baker Mayfield’s job to lose in Carolina.” Mike Garafolo elaborated. “The way it was explained to me, maybe Darnold has been more of the steady guy, the … [Read more...] about Carolina Panthers depth chart 2022: Starting QB ‘Baker Mayfield’s job to lose,’ per report

Pittsburgh Steelers depth chart lists Mitch Trubisky as starting QB ahead of first preseason game

August 6, 2022 by 247sports.com Leave a Comment

The Pittsburgh Steelers released their first depth chart of the 2022 season. While it is not an accurate indicator of how the regular season season will start, it certainly provides clarity on how the Steelers' roster might look when training camp ends. Free-agent signing Mitch Trubisky is QB 1 at the moment, and he is followed by Pittsburgh veteran Mason Rudolph and 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett , in that order. This is the first season the Steelers will experience what it’s like without having Ben Roethlisberger on its roster since 2003. With a rotation of those three quarterbacks, there’s room for competition and for coach Mike Tomlin to experiment with who and what fits best for Pittsburgh. Trubisky signed with the Steelers in March on a two-year, $14.25 million contract worth up to $27 million in incentives after spending the 2021 season on a one-year deal as backup to Bills quarterback Josh Allen. With that kind of contract, it was expected that … [Read more...] about Pittsburgh Steelers depth chart lists Mitch Trubisky as starting QB ahead of first preseason game

NFL signings from USFL tracker: Browns ink DPOY Chris Odom, Cowboys add league MVP

/ Getty Images The rebranded USFL pulled off something the AAF and XFL could not: a successful spring season. It was the one-loss Birmingham Stallions who hoisted the hardware earlier this month, as they defeated the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL championship, 33-30. While the Stallions didn't have the USFL MVP, the Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year or Coach of the Year, Skip Holtz put together arguably the most talented roster in the league. If there's anything we learned from the past few months, it's that there's talent not rostered in the NFL . From defensive linemen to even kickers, the USFL showcased some impressive players who NFL teams are intrigued by. Below, we will break down each USFL-to-NFL signing that has been reported this offseason. Arizona Cardinals WR Victor Bolden Jr. (Birmingham Stallions) Bolden, who had short stints in the NFL with the 49ers , Bills and Lions, proved to be a valuable piece in the Stallions' … [Read more...] about NFL signings from USFL tracker: Browns ink DPOY Chris Odom, Cowboys add league MVP

Washington Commanders sign LB Nate Gerry, release QB Cole Kelley

August 7, 2022 by 247sports.com Leave a Comment

The Washington Commanders signed linebacker Nate Gerry among a flurry of moves Sunday. The franchise also inked safety Steven Parker and tight end Eli Wolf while releasing quarterback Cole Kelley, linebacker Bryce Notree and guard Tyrese Robinson. Among the departures, Kelley was an undrafted free agent. The Commanders' quarterbacks are now down to starter Carson Wentz and backups Taylor Heinicke and Sam Howell. Gerry, meanwhile, previously spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles before a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers. Gerry was originally a safety when coming out of college at Nebraska but transitioned to a linebacker in Philadelphia. A fifth-round draft pick in 2017, he spent four seasons with the Eagles and appeared in 46 games, making 22 starts along the way. He totaled 163 tackles (101 solo, eight for loss), 3 1/2 sacks and three interceptions. He has not played since the 2020 season. That year, Gerry played in only seven games before an ankle injury … [Read more...] about Washington Commanders sign LB Nate Gerry, release QB Cole Kelley

Report: Browns will try to trade for Patriots backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo

January 31, 2017 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Despite drafting quarterbacks in the first round on three occasions since 2007 -- including Johnny Manziel in 2014 -- the Browns are in desperate need of ... a franchise quarterback. Rookie Cody Kessler was serviceable under trying circumstances in 2016 -- the third-round pick completed 66 percent of his passes and had six touchdowns versus two interceptions, but he was also winless in eight starts. (Yes, we know, QB wins aren't the be-all end-all, but the point remains: The Browns could stand to upgrade the position.) The other quarterbacks to see the field last season are, for various reasons, short-term solutions ( Josh McCown is 37 and Robert Griffin III shows no signs of returning to the form that made him Offensive Rookie of the Year with the Redskins in 2012). Which brings us back to the Browns' ongoing search for a quarterback. Perhaps the most popular candidate to be in Cleveland in 2017: Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo . He started the first two games of … [Read more...] about Report: Browns will try to trade for Patriots backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Giants curtain call for Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones? Sizing up former top-10 picks under Brian Daboll

August 5, 2022 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Getty Images It may be a cliche to say that for many players NFL doesn't mean National Football League, rather that it stands for "Not For Long," but the New York Giants are living proof that the saying has merit. Rewind to their 2019 training camp: running back Saquon Barkley had just lived up to the hype of being selected second overall in the 2018 draft with a historic rookie season. He led the NFL with 2,028 scrimmage yards, the third-most as a rookie in NFL history behind Hall Famers Eric Dickerson (2,212) and Edgerrin James (2,139 in 1999) en route to winning Offensive Rookie of the Year. At quarterback, the G-Men thought they had their young Eli Manning clone after selecting Duke's Daniel Jones sixth overall in the 2019 NFL Draft . Today, both Barkley and Jones are at a career crossroads, each staring down the final year of the rookie contracts in 2022 while playing for a new head coach in former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and general … [Read more...] about Giants curtain call for Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones?
