The New York Giants have a surprising heir apparent to Eli Manning and a run-stopping successor to Snacks Harrison on the defensive line. The Giants stunned many at the NFL draft by taking quarterback Daniel Jones of Duke with the sixth pick overall, before turning to a glaring need on defense by selecting Clemson tackle Dexter Lawrence with the 17th pick overall. In the weeks leading up to the draft, many prognosticators felt the Giants would fill the defensive needs with the sixth pick and then turn their attention to quarterback at No. 17, the pick they got from Cleveland by trading wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., perhaps targeting Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State or Drew Lock of Missouri. General manager Dave Gettleman had other thoughts. He first took Jones, who threw for 8,201 yards and 52 touchdowns in three years starting for Duke after joining the program as a walk-on, and then grabbed the 342-pound Lawrence with the second choice in the round. By Cindy Boren The Washington Post Tues., April 23, 2019 Odell Beckham Jr. used Twitter on Monday night to unload on the New York Giants, ripping the general manager of his former team, defending himself against the notion that he was a team “cancer” and saying that he had “begged” Coach Pat Shurmur to be allowed to be on the sideline during home games. “Im not playin shotsss are fired!!!” he tweeted as the tirade drew to a close. He wasn’t kidding about that. Beckham, who was traded to the Cleveland Browns in March for the Browns’ Nos. 17 and 95 overall picks and Jabrill Peppers, reiterated that he was happy to have landed in The Land while dissing Giants general manager Dave Gettleman over how his five years in New York ended. “Im not upset in ANY way about where I landed,” he tweeted. “But outta respect what they did, was crazy! And beyond disrespectful ! I wanted nothin but the best for NY. But on to … [Read more...] about Odell Beckham Jr. rips New York Giants in a Twitter rant that was ‘almost a therapy session’
The New York Giants had until Tuesday to give Landon Collins the franchise or transition tag to make sure he’s on the roster for another year. They opted against it, and now the path is clear for the three-time Pro Bowl safety to hit the free agency market. He’s already said his goodbyes. When Collins inevitably signs elsewhere, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will be the only player drafted by the Giants between 2008 and 2015 who is still on the team’s roster. That dearth of good drafting left the roster in serious need of a boost. In December 2017, the Giants hired Dave Gettleman as general manager to get the franchise back on track. But a little over a year into his rebuild, it’s hard to see what exactly his plan is for the team. The Giants need to invest in their young talent Collins went to his third consecutive Pro Bowl in January. Beckham is the only other player currently on the Giants who can boast that accomplishment after making it to the Pro Bowl in … [Read more...] about Do the New York Giants actually have a plan?
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning thinks the New York Giants are heading in the right direction, and the soon-to-be 38-year-old believes he has enough in the tank to lead them on another championship run. A day after the Giants (5-9) were eliminated from postseason contention for the sixth time in seven years, Manning said Monday the team didn't win enough of the close games earlier in the season in their 1-7 start. He was encouraged how the team rebounded after the bye week, winning four of five games before being shut out by Tennessee on a rainy Sunday. "Yeah, I know I can play, I can make the throws," said Manning, who has thrown for 3,689 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions while hitting almost 66 percent of his passes this season. "Yesterday, I made some good throws. So, it still feels like I can run around and make plays, and do a lot of good things. When there was a stretch when we were playing good football, and we just got to get back to … [Read more...] about New York Giants back to work a day after being eliminated
