Deshaun Watson suspension: NFL, NFLPA negotiating potential settlement as appeal ruling looms

USATSI Deshaun Watson's immediate NFL future currently lies in the hands of former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey, designated by the league to hear the appeal of initial disciplinary recommendations for the Browns quarterback. With Harvey's deliberation looming, however, the NFL and NFL Players Association are in "active settlement negotiations," according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones and the result likely to allow him to take the field in 2022. Former U.S. District Judge Sue L. Robinson, jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA to recommend discipline for Watson, initially proposed a six-game suspension for the QB, who faced 24 civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct this offseason. The NFL quickly appealed the ruling, with commissioner Roger Goodell seeking at least a full-season ban for Watson after a league investigation revealed a pattern of "predatory" behavior from the former Texans QB in dozens of private massage sessions. Peter Harvey will refrain from ruling in Deshaun Watson case until settlement talks reach impasse – ProFootballTalk

USA TODAY Sports Yes, settlement talks continue between the NFL and the NFL Players Association in the Deshaun Watson case. It’s no surprise at this point. It’s been the case since late last week . Appeals officer Peter Harvey hasn’t completed the (by rule) “expedited” review two weeks after the filing of the league’s appeal of the original six-game suspension for one reason. He’s waiting until the league and the union reach impasse in their ongoing settlement talks. The message on Monday was that a settlement remained viable . At this point, every minute that Harvey doesn’t issue a ruling means that a settlement can still happen. And because the NFL, as a practical matter, controls Harvey, he’ll wait until the NFL tells him that settlement talks have hit a brick wall. That’s the bottom line. No ruling until no settlement. So where could a settlement land? Watson reportedly is willing to accept eight games. The league surely wants at least 12 games. The obvious … [Read more...] about Peter Harvey will refrain from ruling in Deshaun Watson case until settlement talks reach impasse – ProFootballTalk

Settlement remains very possible in Deshaun Watson’s disciplinary case – ProFootballTalk

Getty Images Appeals officer Peter Harvey continues to delay his decision in the Deshaun Watson case, apparently not because he’s undecided or procrastinating. Harvey is believed to be waiting to see whether the league and Watson can work out a deal. The possibility of settlement remains viable, we’re told. Currently, it could go either way. As such things usually do. But this one truly falls into the toss-up category. We’ll wait and see if the NFL and Watson can find a middle ground. Watson’s sudden turn toward remorse is surely part of the effort to negotiate a better outcome than the one he’d otherwise experience. It’s hard to regard this belated awakening as authentic, given the months of doubling down and reciting talking points about never harassing, assaulting, or disrespecting any woman. Then there’s the fact that his lawyer, Rusty Hardin, has publicly said he believes all of the women making accusations against Watson were lying. So was Hardin just lying about all … [Read more...] about Settlement remains very possible in Deshaun Watson’s disciplinary case – ProFootballTalk

Getty Images As the clock ticks toward a resolution of the appeal of the six-game Deshaun Watson suspension, a settlement remains possible. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, an agreed resolution between the NFL and the NFL Players Association could still happen. Last night, the Associated Press reported that Watson would be willing to serve an eight-suspension and pay a $5 million fine. There’s a growing sense that appeals officer Peter Harvey may not issue a ruling today, so that the two sides can try to work something out. Absent a one-year suspension effective immediately, Watson will be able to play tonight, in Jacksonville. The Browns have said that Watson will start the game. The NFL currently holds all the cards. A settlement would end the process, and it would prevent a federal court challenge. It’s unclear what the league would do, or what Watson would be willing to serve. … [Read more...] about Settlement remains possible in Deshaun Watson discipline – ProFootballTalk

Britain’s Richest Man Declares Interest In Buying Manchester United | Football News

British businessman Jim Ratcliffe is "definitely a potential buyer" of Manchester United if the English football giants go on sale, a spokesman for the Ineos petrochemicals billionaire said Wednesday. Ineos was responding to reports United's current owners, the US-based Glazer family, are considering selling a minority stake, with the team currently bottom of the Premier League following a woeful start to the season under new manager Erik ten Hag. The Ineos spokesman told The Times that Ratcliffe, reportedly Britain's richest man, would be prepared to buy such a stake as a prelude to assuming full control at Old Trafford. "If something like this was possible, we would be interested in talking with a view to long-term ownership," the spokesman added. The Glazers, who bought United in 2005 in a leveraged buyout that saddled the club with huge debts, have long been accused of taking more out financially than they have invested in terms of transfer funds or in redeveloping the … [Read more...] about Britain’s Richest Man Declares Interest In Buying Manchester United | Football News
