Titans marcus mariota
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans have an issue protecting their quarterback right now with Marcus Mariota taking a pounding he hasn't experienced since his rookie season. Mariota was sacked 38 times in 12 games in 2015 with 17 coming in a four-game stretch early that season. With Mariota sidelined with an injured knee, the Titans gave up seven sacks in a loss at Houston that prompted controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk to fire then-coach Ken Whisenhunt less than 48 hours later. Now the Titans are on their second different coach since Mariota's first year in the league, and Tennessee has allowed an NFL-worst 39 sacks with 17 in the four games since the team's bye. Mariota has been sacked 35 times this season, missing only one of the sacks over the past month after a stinger knocked him out of a 38-10 loss at Indianapolis on Nov. 18.If the Titans (5-6) are to make a late run at a second straight wild-card berth, they have to protect Mariota better starting Sunday when they … [Read more...] about Sacks piling up as Titans struggle to protect Marcus Mariota
Late in the third quarter of Monday's game with the Houston Texans, Marcus Mariota and Corey Davis gave the Tennessee Titans a much needed jolt. After jumping out to a 10-0 lead, the Titans fell behind 27-10. But with only 13 seconds left in the third quarter, Mariota found Davis for a 48-yard touchdown, trimming the lead. … [Read more...] about Watch: Marcus Mariota finds Corey Davis on 48-yard TD
Marcus Mariota set a surprising record in the Tennessee Titans’ 34-17 loss to the Houston Texans on Monday night.Mariota went 22-for-23 for 303 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He completed 95.7 percent of his passes in the game, which is the highest completion percentage for a quarterback in a loss. The previous record holder was Derek Carr, who went 29-for-32 (90.63 percent) in a September loss to Denver. When a quarterback has those kinds of numbers, you typically expect a win.Mariota looked sharp early in the game. He completed passes down the field to Corey Davis, and he found Jonnu Smith for a short completion over the middle that Smith took for a 61-yard touchdown. Tennessee even opened up with a 10-0 lead before the game turned one-sided, with the contest swinging on a 4th-and-1 stop at the 3 followed by a 97-yard touchdown run for Houston. It’s hard to know what to make of Mariota’s performance in this kind of a loss. He makes lots of short passes and … [Read more...] about Marcus Mariota sets surprising record in loss to Texans
The Titans have a problem. They’re stuck in the in-between. Mike Vrabel’s team is good enough to sneak into the playoffs, but not advance beyond the Divisional Round. It’s bad enough to crash out of the postseason race with a 7-9 record, but not awful enough to claim a premier draft pick. It’s the same competitive limbo in which the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks were trapped from 2002 to 2015 — hovering around .500 with no clear path to prosperity. And at the heart of this football purgatory is Marcus Mariota. Mariota has been an inconsistent presence behind center for the Titans, lighting up opponents some weeks and deflating like a popped Barney balloon in several others. As he finishes up his age-25 season, there’s a chance he may never realize the potential that made him the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. But Mariota is also an occasional stud in a league where quarterback play is more important than ever. On Monday night, he completed … [Read more...] about What should the Titans do with Marcus Mariota?
