By Thuc Nhi Nguyen | [email protected] | Daily NewsPUBLISHED: October 4, 2018 at 10:45 am | UPDATED: October 4, 2018 at 10:45 am The wait for Chip Kelly’s first win at UCLA is now into a second month as the Bruins enter October as one of four remaining FBS teams without a victory. The others are San Jose State, UTEP and Nebraska. The Bruins (0-4, 0-1 Pac-12) are 21-point underdogs this Saturday (4:30 p.m., FOX) against No. 10 Washington. The Huskies haven’t beaten UCLA in the Rose Bowl since 1995. UCLA hopes that streak continues. As always, you can send me your questions for this weekly feature on Twitter at @thucnhi21 or via email ([email protected]). Let’s get to the A’s to your Q’s. DM question: “So what’s the bottom line this season: not enough skilled players on team? Can’t be the coaching, right?” Of the many analysts I’ve talked to about the state of UCLA football this season, none are worried about Chip Kelly’s … [Read more...] about UCLA football mailbag: Can UCLA’s young talent grow up in time?
By Thuc Nhi Nguyen | [email protected] | Daily NewsPUBLISHED: September 27, 2018 at 1:51 pm | UPDATED: September 27, 2018 at 1:51 pm Despite trying to lay low during the bye week, UCLA couldn’t escape the nagging number in the win column. Zero wins entering Friday’s conference opener against Colorado. The beginning of the Chip Kelly era is off to a puzzling start as not only are the Bruins winless, but the offensive guru is also overseeing the worst offense in the Pac-12. The team’s depth took a hit during the bye week, with quarterback Devon Modster announcing that he will transfer and backup center Zach Sweeney retiring due to a shoulder injury. UCLA’s opponent this week, on the other hand, is 3-0 and on the cusp of breaking into the AP Top 25. Despite the obvious struggles to begin the year, players have said the team remains in “good spirits,” as safety Adarius Pickett said this week. But the longer the win column stays empty, the harder it … [Read more...] about UCLA football mailbag: How are the Bruins holding up mentally?
By Thuc Nhi Nguyen | [email protected] | Daily NewsPUBLISHED: September 20, 2018 at 3:42 pm | UPDATED: September 20, 2018 at 3:44 pm After three games and three losses, UCLA’s bye week comes at a good time for the Bruins to evaluate their progress before conference play begins. Frankly, there’s a lot of evaluation to be done. The Bruins have the worst offense in the conference, but will finally be at full strength next week when the last two suspended players are eligible to return. The defense has had just one sack in the past two games. There is also Twitter drama, which seems like it’s becoming an annual occurrence for UCLA football. So there’s no game this week, but UCLA is plenty busy, evidenced by all the questions for this week’s mailbag. So let’s get to them: OFFENSE What happened to Modster? As the only QB that has won a game at UCLA how is he not seeing the field? He seemed tailor made for Chip’s offense. — Jason Ruiz … [Read more...] about UCLA football mailbag: Bye week concerns
By Thuc Nhi Nguyen | [email protected] | Daily NewsPUBLISHED: September 18, 2018 at 4:08 pm | UPDATED: September 18, 2018 at 4:10 pm Between the fumbles and the flags and the offense that was moving at a snail’s pace, what Petros Papadakis watched when the FOX Sports analyst called UCLA’s game against Fresno State on Saturday was a far cry from what Chip Kelly was supposed to have brought to Westwood. “That’s not a football team that has it together,” Papadakis said Tuesday. At 0-3 entering an open date this week, the present version of UCLA football looks rough. But the difficult start hasn’t deterred analysts from thinking brighter days are ahead for UCLA in the coming years. “Even though I work for Pac-12 Networks, if I was worried, I would say it,” analyst Yogi Roth said. “There’s not an ounce of me that’s concerned about the future of this program.” When players met with reporters after Saturday … [Read more...] about Looking at the state of UCLA football after nonconference play
