Clemson stated a convincing case with a 44-16 victory over Alabama in a one-sided battle of 14-0 teams in the College Football Playoff championship game at Levi’s Stadium. Of course, this is an argument with no definitive answer. But the Tigers became the first major-college team to complete a season 15-0 in 121 years, since Penn did it in 1897. The Quakers’ 15th victory (and 12th shutout) was a 4-0 conquest of Cornell. We will assume this Clemson team is better than Cornell — or Gettysburg, Franklin & Marshall, Wesleyan or anyone else on Penn’s schedule, for that matter. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney nominated his team. “For our seniors to go out 15-0, to be the best ever … there was talk about that all season and we were … [Read more...] about Is 15-win Clemson the best college football team ever?

It's time for questions to start being answered by Tom Fornelli @TomFornelli 38s ago • 6 min read The beginning of the college football season is a beautiful time of year for a few reasons. The first -- and biggest -- is that we have college football to watch. That cannot be overstated. I like baseball a lot, but having nothing but baseball to watch the last couple of months was wearing me down.I needed this.Another reason I find the start of the year interesting is I can finally start the process of figuring out the answers to the questions I've had about teams for the last eight months. Once a season ends, we spend some time reviewing it and going over what happened, then we turn our eyes forward to the next season, wondering what will happen.I believe I've been on 100 different radio or television shows the last few weeks, being asked about my thoughts for the 2018 season. I've had to write stories here about what I believe teams will do. Who … [Read more...] about Friday Five: College football teams I’m most interested in watching in Week 1
It happens to at least one top 10 team nearly every season by Tom Fornelli @TomFornelli 2m ago • 12 min read College football teams are a lot like people: they're all bound to disappoint you eventually.I was reminded earlier this week that it happens on a regular basis. Following the release of the preseason AP Top 25 poll, The Athletic's Matt Brown did a breakdown of the history of the poll over the last 29 seasons and found some interesting trends. One of them stood out to me.Most years, at least one top-10 team turns out to be wildly overrated and finishes the season unranked. That held true for preseason No. 3 Florida State last year and No. 10 Notre Dame in 2016. All 10 preseason top-10 teams have finished the season ranked in the top 25 in 4 of 29 seasons, and as many as four preseason top-10 teams have finished unranked (2002).To recap, at least one team that began the season in the top 10 of the AP Top 25 poll finished the season unranked … [Read more...] about Which top 10 college football team is the most likely to finish the season unranked?
