USA Gymnastics is turning to two of its most-decorated athletes to help guide its women’s elite program. Alicia Sacramone Quinn and Chellsie Memmel, teammates on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team that earned silver in Beijing, are part of the new leadership paradigm within the organization. Memmel, the 2005 world champion, will be the technical lead for the women’s program. Sacramone, a 10-time world championship medalist, will serve as the program’s strategic lead. They will be joined in the new system by Dan Baker, who will transition from the elite team women’s developmental coordinator to the developmental lead. All three will begin their new positions on June 1. The technical, strategic and developmental lead positions were established in March following the resignation of high-performance director Tom Forster, who stepped down last November after leading the U.S. women to gold at the 2018 and 2019 world championships and silver at the Tokyo Olympics. U.S. men’s hockey team on brink of best world championship since 1950
The U.S. men’s hockey team is one win from its best standalone world championship finish since 1950. The Americans upset Switzerland, the top team from group play, 3-0 in Thursday’s quarterfinals in Helsinki. Jeremy Swayman of the Boston Bruins got the shutout, while Ben Meyers of the Colorado Avalanche and Adam Gaudette of the Ottawa Senators scored (Meyers twice). They play Olympic champion Finland in Saturday’s semifinals with the winner going to Sunday’s gold-medal game and the loser playing for bronze. The other semifinal pits Canada against the Czech Republic. Last year, the U.S. earned bronze for the fourth time in eight world championships dating to 2013. The Americans’ last silver at a standalone worlds was in 1950. Their last gold at a standalone worlds was in 1933. Their Olympic medals in 1952 (silver), 1956 (silver) and 1960 (gold) also counted as world championship medals before the IIHF started differentiating the tournaments. This year, the U.S. placed … [Read more...] about U.S. men’s hockey team on brink of best world championship since 1950

Asia Cup Hockey: India Beat Indonesia 16-0, Qualify For Super 4s | Hockey News
Rising to the occasion, Indian men's hockey team slammed six goals in the final quarter for a crushing 16-0 victory against Indonesia, a result that took the holders into the knockout stage of the Asia Cup but shut the World Cup door on Pakistan in Jakarta on Thursday. India needed to win the Pool A contest by at least a 15-0 margin to qualify and the young players of the side delivered under pressure. Both India and Pakistan finished on four points each in Pool A behind Japan but the defending champions qualified for the Super 4s due to better goal difference (1). Pakistan had lost 2-3 to Japan earlier in the day. The result not only pushed Pakistan out of the tournament but also dashed their hopes of World Cup qualification since only the top three teams here will be given tickets for the big event. India, being the hosts, will play the World Cup later in the year and hence Hockey India decided to send young players to this tournament for exposure. Dipsan Tirkey (5 goals) and … [Read more...] about Asia Cup Hockey: India Beat Indonesia 16-0, Qualify For Super 4s | Hockey News

Past, Present, Future: Jaden Ivey
Jaden Ivey is the most dynamic guard in the draft and considered a virtual lock to be a top five pick. Most mock drafts currently have him slotted at either four or five to Sacramento or Detroit respectively, but there’s a possibility someone in the top three opts to bet on his potential too. Three years ago, that would have seemed like a virtual impossibility. Since then, though, Ivey has experienced an almost unprecedented athletic evolution that has shot him up draft boards. High School Ivey’s mother, Nielle Ivey, who is currently the head women’s basketball coach at Notre Dame, had just finishing her first season in the WNBA when she had Jaden. She went on to play four more seasons before beginning her coaching career – which included a long tenure at her alma mater, where Jaden essentially grew up. He played the first three years of his high school basketball at Marian High School, just five miles from Notre Dame’s campus. He made a substantial jump between his … [Read more...] about Past, Present, Future: Jaden Ivey
Cowboys 2022 OTAs injury news: Tyron Smith misses practice with back tightness, newly signed WR in ankle boot
© Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports It goes without saying that the coming 2022 NFL season is exceedingly important for the Dallas Cowboys , and not simply head coach Mike McCarthy. It's also pivotal for several cornerstone players, including All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith , who has had difficulty staying healthy on an annual basis. Unfortunately for Smith, with OTAs now well underway, he's already nursing an issue the Cowboys are keeping an eye on -- albeit seemingly minor (at least at the moment). The eight-time Pro Bowler missed the second day of practice at OTAs due to tightness in his lower back, McCarthy told media Wednesday, and while he was present the entire day leading up to practice, the team decided to "play it smart" and not push the issue by forcing him onto the field for drills in late May. The 31-year-old hasn't played a complete regular season since 2015, and recently missed all but two games in 2020 due to neck surgery and a high ankle sprain along with a stint … [Read more...] about Cowboys 2022 OTAs injury news: Tyron Smith misses practice with back tightness, newly signed WR in ankle boot
Frank Reich reveals why the Colts placed a premium on signing Nick Foles when he became available
USA Today Images The Indianapolis Colts made sure they were able to sign Nick Foles , completing the revamp of a quarterback position that seemed dire when the team moved on from Carson Wentz . Indianapolis was able to acquire Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons and signed Foles in the days after the Chicago Bears released him. Even with Ryan in the building, Reich saw firsthand what Foles could do with a talented roster. Foles did play a huge role in the Philadelphia Eagles winning the Super Bowl , a team Reich was the offensive coordinator during that 2017 run. Now Reich is reunited with Foles. If Reich needs Foles to win a game for the Colts, he doesn't expect the offense to miss a beat. "You've got a guy in Nick Foles who has proven that he can do it at the biggest level and the biggest stage, in any kind of weather, in any kind of moment," Reich said. "I like to think of it that sometimes there are backups that can come in and manage a game and squeak out … [Read more...] about Frank Reich reveals why the Colts placed a premium on signing Nick Foles when he became available
AFC South burning questions: How much of an upgrade is Matt Ryan? Can Ryan Tannehill bounce back?
Marc Lebryk-USA TODAY Sports The AFC South figures to be an interesting division to watch in 2022. We have two potential contenders in the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans , and then two rebuilding teams in the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans . Still, with how crazy this offseason has been, there's no telling who could end up on top in the AFC South. All four teams will be forced to answer burning questions in 2022 -- answers that could decide how the season pans out. Is Davis Mills a franchise quarterback? Can Jonathan Taylor and Derrick Henry carry their respective offenses? How quickly can Doug Pederson get the Jaguars back on track? Let's examine four more burning questions in the AFC South. Texans: Is Lovie Smith the guy? Deshaun Watson is gone, and now it's time to focus on the rebuild in Houston. The Texans have shown by the decisions they have made in free agency over the past two offseasons that they are going to complete the rebuild … [Read more...] about AFC South burning questions: How much of an upgrade is Matt Ryan? 2022 NBA Mock Draft: Auburn’s Jabari Smith is new top pick by Magic, Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren slips to No. 2
USATSI At long last, the 2022 NBA Draft process is beginning to give us clarity. With the draft order for every pick officially finalized and the NBA Draft Combine in the rearview mirror, how next month's draft may look like is starting to take shape. Now's when we start making projections and start taking into account team need, fit and intel about which team may or may not favor specific prospects. Now's when the real fun begins. Our latest mock draft projections for every first-round pick takes all of that into account and features a new No. 1 for the first time this year. The new No. 1 in my mock draft is Auburn forward Jabari Smith Jr., who has consistently been a top-four player on the mock draft all year and a top-three player on the Big Board . Smith bumps Gonzaga 7-foot center Chet Holmgren to the Thunder at No. 2 . Early guesses are the Magic favor Smith's sharpshooting safety over Holmgren, whose upside comes with some risk given his skinny frame. This … [Read more...] about 2022 NBA Mock Draft: Auburn’s Jabari Smith is new top pick by Magic, Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren slips to No. 2
