WASHINGTON — For all of the talk from White House aides about how President Trump's State of the Union address would center on unity and finding common ground, the thrust of his speech Tuesday night was anything but. Sure, there were niceties at the beginning. "I stand here ready to work with you to achieve historic breakthroughs for all Americans," Trump remarked. "The agenda I will lay out this evening is not a Republican agenda or a Democrat agenda." But at its core, Trump's speech was a full-throttled demand for his immigration policies and border wall - which precipitated the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. And while he avoided mentioning the past shutdown, he also offered no path forward to avoid the next looming one. "No issue better illustrates the divide between America's working class and America's political class than illegal immigration," he said. "Wealthy politicians and donors push for open borders while living their lives behind walls and gates and … [Read more...] about The White House plugged ‘unity’ ahead of the State of the Union. After putting a good chunk of the federal government into sleep mode, then arm-wrestling with the Democrats as the partial government shutdown dragged its way into the history books, President Donald Trump not only has the nation’s attention for Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, he’s practically got America in a head lock. Moments like these seem custom-made for Trump. And since the annual address is the closest thing we have to the British Parliament’s opening ceremonies or the gun salute for the Queen’s birthday, the president will be milking this particular moment for all its worth. This, his second State of the Union address, is dripping with small bits of history: It will be Trump’s first speech to Congress with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi perched over his … [Read more...] about State of the Union: What time is Trump speaking tonight, and where can we watch?

Google CEO Sundar Pichai will appear at the White House on Thursday alongside other Silicon Valley leaders as a cloud of suspicion hangs over his company in the wake of several reports in recent months of bias against conservatives and specifically supporters of President Donald Trump. The Boston Red Sox have accepted an invitation from the White House to attend a ceremony during which the team’s World Series championship will be celebrated. Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who previously criticized Donald Trump over comments about his native Puerto Rico, pledged not to be a distraction during the visit. “I’m gonna use my platform the right way,” Cora said Monday, via ESPN. “I’m not gonna embarrass anybody. Actually, I’m gonna represent 4 million people from back home the right way when we go there.”Red Sox president Sam Kennedy confirmed Monday at a screening of the team’s World Series documentary that the organization has accepted the invitation, although no date has been confirmed for the visit.
