Little by little, drip by drip, it was the accretion of small agonies that drove Andy Murray into the interview room at Melbourne Park on Friday to tearfully announce his impending retirement. Most ordinary mortals would have packed it in long ago, but then Murray would not have won two Wimbledon titles without his extraordinary stubbornness. A natural ditherer, he likes to keep all options in play until the last minute. What pushed him over the edge this time was the humiliation of Thursday afternoon’s practice match against world No 1 Novak Djokovic. Murray and Djokovic were born just a week apart, in May 1987, so that their careers travelled in parallel. Here at the Australian Open, they contested no fewer than four finals. Murray lost the lot, but at least he had always competed – until now. “You just kind of feel like helpless on the court,” he told a group of British reporters on Friday, after an emotional press conference which saw … [Read more...] about Andy Murray admits ‘helpless’ feeling while playing Novak Djokovic in practice match

The two-time SW19 champion, 31, stunned reporters last night in Australia as he choked through the tears to reveal his daily pain is becoming too much to play through. Former world No1 Murray now wants to play on until this summer's Wimbledon, but knows the Australian Open could be his last hurrah. But today, a much-happier looking Muzza posted a pic of him getting a big hug from his mum, calling it the "best way" to get over a bad day. Murray captioned the Instagram post: "Best way to feel better after a tough day is a big cuddle from your mum. "Genuinely been very touched by all of the messages and support from everybody today... Andy Murray broke down in tears on Friday as he conceded that a long-term injury may force him to retire imminently. Britain’s most successful tennis male player since the Second World War told a news conference in Melbourne that next week’s Australian Open may be his last tournament. The three-times Grand Slam winner and double Olympic champion said he had initially planned to stop playing after this year’s Wimbledon championships. A comeback last June did not last and despite a huge effort to get fit, he was forced to cut his season short. The layoff saw his ranking plunge and the 31-year-old is due to play next Monday’s first round match as the world number 230 against the No22 seed, Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut. Andy Murray is one of Britain’s greatest ever sportsmen. He has … [Read more...] about Andy Murray breaks down over retirement fears
