Sasha Baron Cohen’s new show Who is America? apparently fooled gun rights supporters and activists into talking about arming children and, in some cases, toddlers in its debut episode. In one segment from the show, Virginia Citizens Defense League president Philip Van Cleave demonstrates firing guns disguised as stuffed animals. Van Cleave recites nursery rhymes reworded with firearm terminology. In one rhyme, he held a gun disguised as a stuffed bunny (branded a “gunny rabbit”) and sang about where to shoot bad guys: “Head and shoulders, not the toes, not the toes.” Cohen also interviewed Gun Owners of America’s Larry Pratt, who voiced support for a children’s gun training program. Cohen said, “The only thing that will stop a bad man with a gun is a boy with a gun.” Pratt responded, “Or a good toddler.” Pratt read a script praising children’s ability to make quick judgments — failing to notice … [Read more...] about ‘Who Is America’: Conservatives Duped by Outlandish Guns-for-Kids Project
Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s much-hyped Showtime series Who Is America premiered Sunday with the British prankster presenting four personalities, who humiliate everyday Americans and swindle some sitting Congressmen and gun lobbyists. The 30-minute installment opens with Cohen’s Confederate flag-waving southerner Dr. Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr. debating Senator Bernie Sanders about the morality of redistributing wealth. We see the millionaire senator from Vermont vilifies “the one percent,” while Ruddick rambles on about pushing “the 99 percent into the one percent.” Frustrated, Sanders, who said “Obamacare didn’t go far enough,” abruptly ends the interview, telling a scooter-bound Ruddick, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Next, we see Dr. Nira Cain-N’Degeocello, a pussy hat-wearing “cisgender, white heterosexual male” who bicycled across the country interviewing “racist and … [Read more...] about Sacha Baron Cohen’s ‘Who Is America’ Humiliates Private Citizens in Hackneyed Debut
NEW YORK -- "Who is America?" is both the title of Sacha Baron Cohen's first foray into television satire in more than a decade and the existential question on the lips of liberals living through the Trump presidency. Trailed by a blaze of pre-launch publicity and a furious backlash from public figures who believe they have been pranked, its splashy debut won most attention Sunday for hoodwinking Republican politicians into endorsing a made-up plan to train pre-schoolers how to fire a gun. The series brings seven episodes to pay-to-view channel Showtime years after the British comedian was last on television with "Da Ali G Show" -- his wannabe-rapper character interviewing the powerful and famous. Sacha Baron Cohen is back on Showtime with the self-proclaimed most dangerous show in the history of television, Who Is America. A few days ago, Showtime released a series of cryptic trailers for “the most dangerous show in the history of television”. They didn’t reveal the title, or the star behind it, but it was safe to assume that it would be about Donald Trump. Some speculated it would be a Kathy Griffin show given her infamous photoshoot surrounding the President. Fast forward to now, and we know that the man behind those trailers is Sacha Baron Cohen. Of course, the world knows him better by his characters Ali G and Borat. While the latter character’s movie propelled him to international stardom, he’s been off the grid lately. Given how deeply offensive his style of humor is, it’s not hard to see why. But America’s current political climate has forced Cohen to return to the fold. He announced in a tweet that he’s releasing a show, … [Read more...] about Sacha Baron Cohen is back to offend everyone in Who is America, but is that what people want?
