A Set small text size A Set the default text size A Set large text size It was tough watching Andy Murray’s tearful announcement that this Australia Open could be his last tournament. A persistent hip injury has made it too painful to continue at 31 years of age, and even though he would receive a rousing and genuine farewell at Melbourne Park, as he’s universally respected, the home of tennis is where he should call halt. The Scot is loved at SW19. For as long as he lasts in the 2019 edition, Murray will play before a packed centre court where he’s won two Wimbledons, and a sardine-like packed open-air ‘Murray Mound’ at the back of the grandstand with a huge television screen. That crowd will go ballistic the day Sir Andy Murray hangs up his racquet, and he thoroughly deserves a grand farewell of that magnitude, more so than one from the furthest Slam on the planet. What is it? It is a first round match in the men's singles of the 2019 Australian Open in which Andy Murray, double Wimbledon winner, former US Open champion, double Olympic gold medal winner and five times a runner-up at Melbourne takes on Spain's No22 seed Roberto Bautista Agut. On Friday the unseeded Murray was asked whether after 18 months of injury trouble and gruelling recovery from hip surgery whether this could be his last tournament, he said: Yeah, I think there’s a chance of that for sure. Because I am not sure I am going to be able to play through the pain for the next four or five months." When is it? Monday, January 14 in Melbourne. What time does it start? The order of play will not be finalised until the day before so we cannot be sure. Play commences at 11am local time on Monday - Melbourne is 11 hours ahead of GMT so the first match will begin at midnight UK time which will feel like Sunday night but is actually Monday morning. ANDY MURRAY has plenty to keep him busy when he stops playing tennis. Not least his two young daughters, Sophia and Eadie, and life with them and wife Kim. But high achievers in any field who “retire” tend to find it hard to put their feet up for long. The same competitiveness and drive to be the best he could be which made Murray Britain’s greatest tennis player, and one of its greatest ever athletes, will need new channels in which to express themselves. The most obvious is passing on his love and knowledge of the sport he graced to future players. Murray already has his 77 Sports Management company, with up-and-coming British tennis stars Katie Swan and Aidan McHugh on its books, as well as promising athletes from other sports. 77 was named after the 77-year drought of British men’s singles champions at Wimbledon which Murray ended on that unforgettable day of July 7, 2013. Murray lifted the title again in 2016 and will be very disappointed if the nation has … [Read more...] about Hotels, coaching, punditry.. Andy Murray will give his all to whatever’s next
ANDY MURRAY got a cuddle from mum Judy after his "tough day" in which he revealed plan to retire from tennis at Wimbledon... if not sooner. The two-time SW19 champion, 31, stunned reporters last night in Australia as he choked through the tears to reveal his daily pain is becoming too much to play through. Former world No1 Murray now wants to play on until this summer's Wimbledon, but knows the Australian Open could be his last hurrah. But today, a much-happier looking Muzza posted a pic of him getting a big hug from his mum, calling it the "best way" to get over a bad day. Murray captioned the Instagram post: "Best way to feel better after a tough day is a big cuddle from your mum. "Genuinely been very touched by all of the messages and support from everybody today...
