“Might Be the Guy”: Jayawardene Thinks Pakistan Star Can Dethrone Root As Top Test Batter | Cricket News

August 11, 2022 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

Dubai: Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene has picked Pakistan captain Babar Azam as the cricketer who, he believes, can dethrone England's Joe Root as top Test batter. Root has been ruling the roost at the top of the Test rankings since June, with the Englishman enjoying a fine World Test Championship, and in a rich vein of form under new coach Brendon McCullum. The former England captain has scored more runs than any other player since the turn of the decade, and deservedly claimed the ICC Men's Test Player of the Year award in 2021. "Tough one!" Jayawardena said on the latest episode of The ICC Review, when asked who can dethrone Root from the top spot. "I would say Babar Azam has an opportunity. He's been consistent in all three formats and it shows in his rankings. He's a naturally gifted player, plays in all conditions, he's got the game to adapt as well. "It depends on the amount of cricket, who's playing when and how much but Babar might be the guy." Babar is the … [Read more...] about “Might Be the Guy”: Jayawardene Thinks Pakistan Star Can Dethrone Root As Top Test Batter | Cricket News

Australia's cricket stars have donated prize money from their recent Sri Lanka tour to help the crisis-hit nation's children, officials said on Thursday. Cricket Australia said US$30,000 would be donated as a gesture of support, after the men's squad witnessed long fuel queues and political demonstrations during the mid-year tour. Soaring inflation and widespread fuel shortages have made life tough for millions of Sri Lankans. The United Nations has declared a humanitarian crisis and widespread protests led to the ouster of the country's president and prime minister. Montreal Masters: Nick Kyrgios Beats No.1 Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz And Stefanos Tsitsipas Ousted | Tennis News

August 11, 2022 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

Nick Kyrgios rallied to topple world number one Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Montreal Masters on Wednesday as the top three seeds tumbled in the second round. Australia's Wimbledon finalist beat Medvedev 6-7 (2/7), 6-4, 6-2 to produce his second career upset of a reigning number one after ambushing Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2014. Unseeded American Tommy Paul also came from a set down to send second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz of Spain packing 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (9/7), 6-3 while unseeded Briton Jack Draper beat third-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 7-5, 7-6 (7/4). Kyrgios started the landslide. The mercurial Aussie produced his usual on-court antics, complaining about a high bounce, hitting a ball into the stands to draw a warning and bickering with his player box in moments of tension. But after gathering his formidable resources, the 27-year-old ranked 37th finished off Medvedev in exactly two hours. "I don't go in looking at the rankings, just the guy in front of me," Kyrgios … [Read more...] about Montreal Masters: Nick Kyrgios Beats No.1 Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz And Stefanos Tsitsipas Ousted | Tennis News
