Winners and losers at Michigan International Speedway – NBC Sports
Here’s a look at the winners and losers from Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway: WINNERS Kevin Harvick — Finally, a winner . Harvick had grown tired of answering questions about his extended winless streak, which reached 65 before he scored Sunday at MIS. And it was no fluke. Harvick charged to the front late in the afternoon, held off his challengers and won relatively easily. Now 46, Harvick scored his 28th win after turning 40 years old, putting him third all-time on that list. Bubba Wallace — Wallace was seriously disappointed after finishing second and failing to ride a strong car to his first win of the year, but he scored his fourth straight top-10 finish, both his career longest top-10 streak and the longest for 23XI Racing. Ty Gibbs — Toyota’s “super sub” had another good day, bringing Kurt Busch ‘s No. 45 home in 10th. Austin Hill — Xfinity Series regular had a fine run in its Cup Series debut, finishing 18th, … [Read more...] about Winners and losers at Michigan International Speedway – NBC Sports
NASCAR Crash Course: Kissing the bricks was best medicine for Tyler Reddick, Richard Childress Racing
Getty Images One way to get over a breakup is to bury yourself in work. Tyler Reddick used that focus to win one of NASCAR's crown jewels, an Indianapolis Motor Speedway triumph Sunday he hopes is step one to healing an open wound with Richard Childress Racing. Reddick survived a Mario Kart-style ending to this Indy road course, where every turn 1 restart felt like drivers sending it full speed, pinball style, slamming into each other just to slow down and make it through the corner. Once Austin Dillon forced overtime by getting stuck in the gravel, Reddick's rival Ross Chastain had a different idea on how to handle the crazy restarts: blow past turn 1 altogether. it appears ross chastain simply opted out of turn 1 #NASCAR #Verizon200 pic.twitter.com/U0t2CBd4cM — Steve Luvender (@steveluvender) July 31, 2022 "I thought I abided by the rule," Chastain said of choosing an access road. Optimistic Serena Williams Emerging From Her Tennis “Tunnel” | Tennis News
Serena Williams stepped onto a hardcourt for the first time in a year and a half on Monday and fought through for a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Spain's Nuria Parrizas Diaz. The 40-year-old American was competing in only her second match this season in defeating the 57th-ranked lucky loser to reach the second round. Williams earned her first victory since last season at Roland Garros, some 14 months ago. The relieved 23-time Grand Slam winner said the victory boosted what had been fragile confidence after her long periods of recent competitive inactivity. "I guess there's just a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm getting closer to the light," she said. "I can't wait to get to that light. I love playing though, it's amazing but I can't do this forever. "Sometimes you just want to try your best to enjoy the moments and do the best that you can." MLB Star Power Index: Handshake’s promise goes unfulfilled for Cardinals; wrong time to celebrate Juan Soto
Welcome to the MLB Star Power Index -- an undertaking that determines with awful authority which players are dominating the current zeitgeist of the sport, at least according to the narrow perceptions of this miserable scribe. While one's presence on this list is often celebratory in nature, it can also be for purposes of lamentation or ridicule. The players listed are in no particular order, just like the phone book. To this week's honorees ... Juan Soto SD • RF • 22 View Profile What are we to do when signs seemingly dispatched from the firmament mislead us? How does one carry forward when the harbingers prove meaningless? What becomes of our cozy assumptions when the auguries fail to to augur? These are the unpleasant internal confrontations presently being experienced by rooters of the St. Louis Cardinals . Yes, surely consoling them is their team's first-place standing in National League Central, but in some ways that is overshadowed by the fact … [Read more...] about MLB Star Power Index: Handshake’s promise goes unfulfilled for Cardinals; wrong time to celebrate Juan Soto
Caleb Williams ready to face pressure head on as USC attempts to engineer historic one-year turnaround
Getty Images LOS ANGELES -- Caleb Williams was made for this moment. It goes beyond the promise, the responsibility, the absolute understanding of his new football life in the nation's second-largest media market. His understanding of his place in the SoCal landscape comes the instant he shakes your hand. It's more than a shake; he grasps your hand, holding it for a moment to ensure eye contact is held. "It is a pleasure meeting you," said USC's quarterback to a stranger who introduced himself. Maybe too much is made of the gravity of that moment, but the point is Williams made it his moment. He controlled the exchange for those brief seconds. A small sample size, yes, but it suggests the Oklahoma transfer has a mindset that will aid him in controlling his future surroundings as well. Williams, coach Lincoln Riley and scores of other USC transfers walk into this season with swagger. Whether they like it or not, they all joined the program to win right away. … [Read more...] about Caleb Williams ready to face pressure head on as USC attempts to engineer historic one-year turnaround
